Crane replaces Mickelson at Turnberry

Three-time major champion winner Phil Mickleson withdrew from the 2009 British Open today. Phil confirmed that he will stay home to remain with his wife Amy as she starts her recovery from breast cancer. This ends the longest active streak of majors played in at 61. Jack Nicklaus holds the record of 146 straight majors from 1962-1998. Mickelson will be replaced in the field by two-time PGA Tour winner Ben Crane. The alternate list is based on this week's world ranking of all golfers not already in the Open field. Crane was the 1st alternate. He will fly across the pond Sunday morning as he prepares for the links course at Turnberry.
